The importance of new technology for spinal cord injuries

If you've suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident or because of another event, you may feel that you'll never be able to live a normal life again. Part of the reason it's so important to get an appropriate settlement after an accident is because that money could help you get the newest technology and treatment plans in the future.

The technology that helps people with spinal cord injuries is ever changing, and today, there are far more ways to help you walk or move again than there were in the past. As science learns more about spinal cord injuries, there's a chance that even if you can't stop paralysis today, you'll be able to overcome it in the future.

What kinds of treatments are there for someone suffering with a spinal cord injury?

The traditional method for helping a person with a spinal cord injury is to help decompress the spinal cord and to take the pressure off the nerves that have been impacted. Doctors then treat inflammation and pain with drugs like corticosteroids or NSAID drugs. None of these treatments can actually help fix damage that has already been done, but they can prevent further damage.

Today, a new possibility for healing is the use of stem cells. These cells are undifferentiated, which means they have not yet formed into nerve cells, blood cells or other forms. Stem cells can multiply with the ability to turn into any type of cell, which is why they're so important to the scientific community and patients like yourself.

Stem cells could be the answer to helping heal neurons, which are very limited in how they regenerate. If scientists can determine how to grow the correct cells, spinal cord injuries could become curable.

Other options for treatment include electric stimulation and brain-computer interfaces. Electric stimulation is used to create muscle contractions. Comparatively, with brain-computer interfaces, a device bypasses the damaged area of the spine and stimulates muscles that are paralyzed.

Many of these treatments are in their early stages, so not many people have access to them. In the future, these may become common treatment options. With the right settlement and support for your medical care, you can make sure you have what you need to try every possible treatment option.
