Post-concussion syndrome is complex and life-altering

You knew it would take time to recover from your concussion, but you didn't realize how serious the symptoms would be. Known as post-concussion disorder, the disorder is one with various symptoms that last for weeks to months after an injury that results in a concussion.

Your concussion likely resulted from a blow to the head. This might have caused the brain to impact the skull or sheer in a way that resulted in damage. Even if you didn't pass out and were aware the entire time, you could still be suffering from post-concussion syndrome now.

What symptoms does post-concussion syndrome cause?

Some common symptoms of this syndrome include headaches and dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, blurry vision, a loss of concentration, poor memory and anxiety. There are others, too, so it's important to talk to your doctor if you aren't feeling like yourself.

Why do people suffer from post-concussion disorder?

When you suffer a concussion, the brain's electrical currents and nerve connections are disrupted. There may be structural damage, in which case the nerves in the brain must reroute themselves to continue making the right connections.

It may be that many of the post-concussive problems are related to anxiety, since the most common symptoms are headaches, sleep problems like insomnia, and dizziness. These are also symptoms suffered by those with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-concussion syndrome has the potential to affect your life in the long term. To help you cope with the syndrome, there may be medical treatments and options available to you. That's why it's important to hold the person who caused your accident responsible for your injuries. He or she should be the one responsible for covering your medical needs and expenses while you recover, so you can focus only on your health and getting back to the life you love.
