Reduce the risk of trampoline injuries on your property

If you were thinking of purchasing a trampoline for your children, you might want to reconsider.

Trampolines continue to pose a high risk of injury for children. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Review, over 100,000 trampoline injuries occur in the United States each year. Of which, 90 percent of all trampoline injuries affect children under 14 years old.

If you own a trampoline or are thinking of purchasing one, consider the following ways to keep your children safe:

Limit the number of jumpers: The number of jumpers allowed on a trampoline depends on weight restrictions. For a miniature trampoline, the weight limit is around 150 pounds. However, you generally do not want more than one child jumping on a miniature trampoline at once. For larger trampolines, the weight limit is normally 400 pounds, which can handle around 4-5 children.

Pad the surrounding area: One of the biggest safety precautions every trampoline should have is a net around the outside to prevent children from falling off. Additionally, you should cover the trampoline springs with protective padding and make sure the trampoline is a safe distance away from anything children could land on that might injure them.

Supervise children at all times: The safest way to protect your children on a trampoline is to watch them. Even if your children are teenagers, it is still important that you do. Teenagers are more likely to attempt somersaults and flips that could cause serious injuries to their neck and spinal cord.

As you know from your childhood, trampolines can be fun. However, they can cause very serious injuries if children are not safe. The most common trampoline injuries include head and neck injuries, broken bones, concussions, sprains and paralysis. If your child is injured on a trampoline, take them to a doctor immediately.
