How can you know if your child has a concussion?

Having your kids play sports after school is good for them in many ways. It teaches valuable skills and keeps them active.

However, sports, especially ones that involve physical contact, can be dangerous for your children. Sports like tackle football, soccer and hockey, among others, pose a few risks to your children. You might be worried about your children suffering a concussion during their after school activities.

You've seen your child get tackled and hit on the head with the ball before, but how do you know if this was enough to cause a concussion?

Signs of a concussion in children

If your child is displaying one or more of the following symptoms, you may need to take them to the doctor immediately. Symptoms of a concussion in children include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Blurry/double vision
  • Light/noise sensitivity
  • Feeling tired or dazed/trouble sleeping
  • Confusion or memory issues
  • Slow responsiveness
  • Significant changes in mood, personality or behavior

What should you do?

Concussions are dangerous to any individual. Children in particular could suffer some serious health consequences if a concussion goes untreated. If your child does not get enough rest and recuperation, they can develop serious complications.

If your child is displaying any of the previously mentioned symptoms, you will want to take them to a doctor right away for an official diagnosis.

If they are diagnosed with a concussion, they should get plenty of rest and take a break from physical activity. They may also need to have adjustments made at school and in other activities.
