According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 28 Americans pass away per day due to drunk driving. In San Francisco, and across California, these types of motor vehicle accidents may also lead to debilitating injuries when they happen. Unfortunately, some of them occur on-the-job. For those whose job responsibilities involve driving, such as truck drivers and taxi drivers, drunk drivers pose a serious threat. However, there are also some workers operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, threatening the lives of others on the road.

Alcohol use occurs on the job for different reasons. For example, a worker may have an addiction to alcohol, or they may have accidentally consumed too much alcohol during their lunch break. It is very important for those who drive while working to avoid any level of alcohol intoxication that impairs their ability to safely operate a vehicle. In fact, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration states that driving abilities are usually hampered before most people even display signs of being drunk.

If a worker believes that his or her co-worker is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, they should try to step in. Depending on the details of the situation, some people can successfully take the keys away from their co-workers if they suspect that the person has been drinking and is not capable of driving sober.

There are many aspects of workplace safety, from training to addressing hazards. For those whose job duties include driving, traffic accident prevention is paramount and employees should remember that alcohol never mixes with work.
