You have been worrying about your child since the day they were born. Now that they are old enough to drive, you probably start sweating every time you watch them leave the driveway.

In the modern world there are plenty of distractions that make driving dangerous. It is so easy for your teenage child to grab their phone while they are behind the wheel. What can you do to keep them safe?

Too many teens are texting while driving

Drivers younger than 20 have the highest chance of dying in a distraction-related crash, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Almost half of high school students surveyed said that they have sent a text or email at least once while driving.

Students who text and drive frequently also tend to have other risky driving behaviors. If your teen uses their phone while driving, they are more likely to drive without wearing a seatbelt or drink and drive.

What you can do to help your teen

You may not be able to monitor your adolescent at all times when they are driving-but you can still promote safe behaviors. Make sure that you:

  • Lead by example and never use your phone while driving
  • Educate them on laws-texting while driving is illegal in California and can lead to hundreds of dollars in fines
  • Enable the “Do Not Disturb While Driving” feature on your teen’s smartphone, stopping notifications while driving
  • Don’t text them when you know they are driving

You will probably always worry about your teenager when they are in the driver’s seat. Teaching them about safe practices and using technology wisely can help your teen focus on the road instead of their phone.
