4 signs your doctor gave you the wrong medication or dosage

On Behalf of | Dec 20, 2024 | Medical Malpractice

When it comes to medication, most people would follow their doctor’s instructions, no questions asked. However, this level of trust can be the reason why you could take the wrong medication without even knowing. Doctors are held to the highest standard in the medical field, but errors can still occur.

Medication errors are among the most common reasons for medical malpractice claims. At the very least, the wrong medication or dosage can cause inconvenient side effects. In the worst cases, these mistakes can lead to the worsening of your condition or severe complications.

If you think your doctor made a medication error, here are several signs that may help confirm your suspicions.

Unexpected side effects

Most medications will have a list of side effects on the pharmacy label. These can range from minor effects like headaches or nausea to more severe ones, such as hallucinations or brain damage. Either way, it is important to understand and prepare for any potential side effects.

But what if you experience conditions not listed on the label? Or what if the effects are more severe than normal? It could be a sign of a medication error, whether that be an incorrect medication, dosage or instruction.

Excessive drowsiness or fatigue

Feeling sleepy or tired is a normal side effect of many medications. However, excessive drowsiness or fatigue could be a sign of overmedication. This is common for certain medications like sedatives, pain medication and anti-anxiety drugs.

Lack of improvement in your condition

Generally, you can expect your condition to improve after taking your prescription. The exception is when you are undergoing a therapeutic trial, wherein your provider is still trying to find the best treatment for you.

If your doctor tells you to expect a recovery and it does not happen, a medication error could be the cause.

Severe complications

Perhaps the most glaring signs of a medication error are severe or even life-threatening complications. These can include:

  • Severe allergic reactions
  • Organ damage
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Seizures

Complications can arise from other illnesses, but if they develop out of nowhere, look for a potential mistake in your prescription.

Unfortunately, medication mistakes are common. Minor errors may only require a simple remedy in your prescription, but if a mistake puts your health and life at risk, taking legal action may be necessary. Consulting a medical malpractice attorney can help you determine the best action for your particular situation.
