Children’s products are subject to rigorous safety standards, yet recalls remain common due to design flaws, manufacturing errors and the presence of toxic materials in far too many instances.

Understanding which categories of children’s products are most frequently recalled can help parents and caregivers make informed choices and respond swiftly to potential hazards.

Toys, clothes and accessories

Toys are consistently among the most recalled children’s products. Hazards include choking risks from small detachable components and toxic materials like lead. These recalls often involve imported products, particularly those manufactured in countries with less stringent safety regulations. Children’s apparel and accessories are also frequently recalled for issues like strangulation hazards from drawstrings and chemical contamination.

Infant sleep equipment and furniture

Items such as baby loungers, swings, bassinets and cribs are regularly recalled due to suffocation, entrapment, or fall hazards. For instance, over 2 million Fisher-Price Snuga Baby Swings were recalled following reports of five infant deaths attributed to suffocation risks. These products often fail to meet federal safety standards for infant sleep, posing significant risks to infants.

Feeding products and utensils

Feeding items, including baby food and utensils, are often recalled due to contamination with heavy metals like lead and arsenic. A notable case involved the recall of Good & Gather baby food sold at Target due to elevated lead levels. These contaminants can result in severe health implications for children.

To more effectively protect children from hazardous products, regularly check the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website for recalls and act upon any recalls that apply to products in your home and/or business.
