Why do many drivers fail to use their turn signals?

On Behalf of | May 21, 2025 | Car Accidents

Drivers are supposed to use their turn signals every time they turn or change lanes. However, it’s very common to see drivers ignoring this simple step. They’ll merge into another lane without any signal to tell other drivers about their intentions. This can be very dangerous and sometimes leads to serious accidents.

But if it’s so dangerous, why don’t people use their blinkers more often? Below are a few of the common reasons that they give.

They’re turning right

People typically use their blinker when turning left, across oncoming traffic. But for a right turn, they’re less likely to do so because they’re just signaling to the cars behind them. That said, it’s still important to let those vehicles know that you’re going to be slowing down and turning.

They’re distracted

There are certainly many cases where drivers just get distracted. Someone might almost miss their turn because they’re looking down at their phone or their GPS, so they suddenly switch lanes without any indication.

They don’t see any other vehicles

In situations wherein people intentionally don’t signal, it’s often that they just didn’t see any other cars around at the time. Someone at a four-way stop without any drivers may assume that they don’t have to signal because there’s no one to see that signal anyway.

They’re following the crowd

Finally, some drivers admit that they don’t use their signal when the car ahead of them also doesn’t. In this sense, drivers just mimic each other’s behavior, even when it’s dangerous.

Seeking compensation
